Tears to Gold || Object 2022

The object reminds us to question the difficult and various relationship between humans and the perception of emotions. 
It comes with a fictive story, inspired by volcanic myths and alchemy.
The object made from terracotta clay is used to collect one‘s tears and turns them into gold. After forming the item by hand, it has to be filled with tears until it‘s able to stand without any support. The unfired object has to be placed on a crack in one of the craters of the volcano Piton de la Fournaise in La Reunion Island. It has to remain there until the volcano erupts and the object melts down and releases the tears into the soil. The blend of tears and the hot lava generate a steam ex- plosion and through this chemical reaction, little pieces of gold are created, shot in the sky and scattered around the island.
